Banff - Canadian Rockies Golf Guide

Banff - Canadian Rockies There may be no more spectacular place to hit a golf ball than the Bow Valley. The anchor is the Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course, the Stanley Thompson masterpiece that opened in 1928 as the first course in history to cost a million dollars to build, and every dollar shows. The routing rolls along the Bow River beneath Mount Rundle and Sulphur Mountain inside Banff National Park, and the par 3 fourth, the Devil's Cauldron, plays about two hundred yards from an elevated tee over a glacial pond to a green backed by ten thousand feet of mountain. It is one of the most famous par 3s on earth, and it lives up to the postcard. The supporting cast is deep. Silvertip and Stewart Creek bring dramatic modern mountain golf to Canmore twenty minutes down the valley, Canmore Golf and Curling Club has been the locals' favorite since 1926, and the two Robert Trent Jones Sr. courses at Kananaskis Country are worth the detour. Drive the Icefields Parkway north and Thompson's other Rockies gem waits at Jasper Park Lodge.

Stay at the Fairmont Banff Springs itself, the Castle in the Rockies that has hosted royalty and Bing Crosby alike since 1888, with a shuttle running between the hotel and the first tee. Off the course, this is a national park doing the heavy lifting: Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, the Banff Gondola, a soak in the Upper Hot Springs, cruises on Lake Minnewanka, and elk wandering through town like they own the place, because they do. The season runs roughly May through October, and September might be the best golf month in Canada.
