Lucero Golf & Country Club: Boquete, Panama

Most golf communities sell you a view. Lucero sells you a climate. Set roughly 1,000 meters up in the Boquete Highlands of Panama's Chiriqui Province, the community sits in a cool, spring-like pocket of the tropics. You can play 18 in the morning without soaking your shirt by the turn, then spend the afternoon on the pool deck watching clouds drift off Volcan Baru. Downtown Boquete is about 9 km down a paved road. That's close enough for dinner and a good cup of coffee, and far enough that the loudest thing at night is the jungle.

The Golf

The centerpiece is a par-72 championship course designed by J. Michael Poellot. At its elevation, Lucero bills it as the highest course in Central America. The routing gives you a little of everything. Some holes ride the ridgelines with long looks at Volcan Baru and, on clear days, all the way to the Pacific. Others drop into dense jungle full of wildlife, and one stretch tumbles down the slopes through Lucero's own coffee plantation. The greens are bent grass. The 14th hole, with its "Infinity" green that seems to hang off the edge of the mountain, is the one that will fill up your camera roll. Residents play at preferred membership rates, and a resident pro is on hand when your short game needs an intervention.

Off the Course

The clubhouse has an infinity pool overlooking the Caldera basin and a hot tub you will appreciate after a hilly round. There's also a poolside dining deck and Seasons, a restaurant with a farm-to-table menu built from what grows in the surrounding highlands. Three clay tennis courts and on-property hiking trails round out the amenities.

Homes and Homesites

Lucero covers more than 700 acres of rainforest, farmland and fairways. Buyers can choose homesites from half an acre up to 2.4 acres, as well as single-family homes, duplex villas and condominiums. If you want to try the lifestyle before you commit, you can book a stay in one of the resort's treehouse suites or newer Canopy suites. Both come with access to the full amenity lineup.

Built Around the Land

Lucero was planned to disturb as little of the forest as possible. The design uses minimal tree removal, rainwater collection for irrigation and rooftop solar panels. Beyond the gates, small farms grow fruit, vegetables and the coffee that put Boquete on the map. The Caldera hot springs are a short drive away, and La Amistad International Park is a massive protected wilderness shared with Costa Rica, with world-class hiking and birding. Whether you're looking for a full-time home, a second home or a place to spend the northern winters, it's a rare setup: championship golf, mountain air and a genuinely wild backyard.
