Master The Putter, Master The Game

Would you like to save strokes in your game? Have you counted how many putts you have during a round of golf? If you could reduce your score by 5 strokes, how pleased would you be? Many of use don't even think about being custom fit for a putter. Yet, putting makes up about 25 - 30 percent of our scores. On average, a good putter should have about 28 - 32 putts per round. Before you go out and purchase that new putter, here are a few things to consider.

There are five factors to consider before buying a putter: length, lie angle/loft, head weight/swingweight, head design and grip size/style. The determining factors for loft should be: the type of grass, if it is a slow, heavy green (the player would require more loft to get the ball rolling smoothly on top of the green). Ideally, putter loft should be about 3-5 degrees. Also, the stroke the player uses is a factor. If the player makes a forward press before starting the back stroke, then the putter is delofted so this player would require a more lofted putter. Or, a play can also deloft the putter by leading the hands ahead of the putter at impact, pinching the bal causing it to hop or bounce as it begins to roll. Loft is a specification that is adjustable in some putters.

To choose the correct length, the player would require to go through a dynamic fitting process. The right length will give the golfer a sound set up and stroke so the stroke will be comfortable and controlled. An effective method to be correctly fit for length, the golfer should be in a relaxed, natural position addressing the ball with his eyes directly over the ball with the arms handing directly below the shoulders, measuring from the ball to the wrist of the players top hand. Using an adjustable putter fitting device that measure correct length conjunction with lie angle is another effective method to determine the proper specifications for the player.

Putter style should be determined by clubhead path and face angle. Your professional fitter can adjust clubhead path by changing swing weight and total weight. For instance, you may require a heavier putter that promotes a smoother stroke and encourages the arms and shoulders to make the stroke leaving the hands and wrist more passive. Either a mallet or blade style putter can be properly fit to the golfer.

Appearance can play a factor in the reaction of some players. To help you choose, practice long and short putts with both and select the one you hit the target with more consistently
