Custom Fitting - Done Properly
There are a lot questions being asked about club fitting these days... how does it work?... what is the procedure?... how long does it take?... what exactly do you do?... Proper custom fitting and custom building of golf clubs should be people driven with a result orientated conclusion. Lets answer some of the above questions.
A typical clubfitting session usually takes about 2 hours. A significant amount of time to do the job right. We start by evaluating your present set of clubs, this gives us a baseline over which to improve. This is an essential part of the fitting process since there is no standard in the golf equipment industry. You must gather your own measurements and specifications.
Take a look at shaft flex: an R flex in one company's shaft could turn out to be a S flex in another. A frequency analyzer will be used to measure the shaft flexes to be able to correctly frequency match your new set of custom clubs. Shaft fitting is the core of the fitting. Going beyond measuring swing speed is necessary to determine the correct shaft for any specific player. Other considerations are: down swing acceleration, shaft loading, swing tempo, and length of backswing. Impact patterns on the face of the club will also be measured and recorded. All of these specifications are factors to be considered to determine the correct shaft for the player. Although one player may have the same swing speed as another, the shaft flex may have to be different because of these other specs. Weight of shaft will also play a major role in determining the correct shaft. Length recommendations will be based on factors such as swing path, swing plane, and swing tempo. Length is a factor that determines distance, accuracy, and feel. The golfer's ball striking skill will be considered when determining length for that player as well the athletic ability and eye/hand coordination. So, with these factors in play, the length will be determined to give the player optimum distance and accuracy with the club that the golfer can hit on-centre the highest percentage of time.
Grip size and style are also part of the fitting process. Every golfer should have the correct style for his/her game and the correct size for optimum feel and performance. Of course, a personal profile will be taken, personal goals, swing characteristics, and player habits such as practice time, playing time, etc.
Once all of the specifications and evaluations are done for the player, then we proceed to the recommendations regarding the set make up required, lofts/lies, head style, grips and shafts that will optimize the golfers game. This is just a brief outline of what to expect from a proper and correct club fitting. For more information contact your local custom fitting professional.
